Whitney Nichole Alston, Founder/Executive Director
Whitney is the eldest daughter of the late Jerome Alston. She attended Nansemond River High School in Suffolk, VA and graduated with honors in 2006. Following graduation she matriculated through Howard University in Washington, D.C. and graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration- Management in 2010. While at Howard University, Whitney enrolled in ROTC and received her Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Whitney is currently serving on Active Duty as a Contracting Officer. In December 2012, Whitney received her Master’s in Acquisition and Contract Administration from the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL.
After her father’s sudden and untimely passing, Whitney contemplated ways to keep his legacy alive. Her first thought was to work with ‘The Men of Distinction’, a program Mr. Alston started to mentor young men. However, after the dissolution of the program, Whitney decided to expand the Foundation’s focus to impact other organizations that work with young males. In addition, she felt it necessary to include asthma awareness as part of the Foundation’s primary focus since Mr. Alston passed of asthma related complications. As a result, the idea of the Breathe Easy 5K Run/Walk for Asthma Awareness was born.
Since it’s inception in 2013, the Foundation has held several events and has been featured in several newspapers. Her work has impressed many in the community to include Mr. Alston’s former coworkers, family and friends. “The love that I have for my Dad is what gives me the drive to keep this Foundation going. This is my way of coping with the loss. It makes it better seeing others support and show their love for the Foundation and it’s cause. I have achieved my initial goal of keeping my dad’s legacy and memory alive in everyones mind; now it’s about benefitting the community.”
